It’s estimated that 23 million adults in the UK* have some form of scarring and for many the effects can be far reaching, causing physical discomfort and itching to low mood and feelings of self-consciousness. Each scar is different, and with multiple treatments available it can be difficult to know what the best options are.

With this in mind, Nuffield Health Bristol Hospital, The Chesterfield, is offering a free meet the experts event on Tuesday 5 May. Taking place from 6.00-8.30pm, the event offers the chance to take advantage of expert advice from Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Mr Jon Pleat, a specialist in scarring and dermatology and head of the scar team at The Chesterfield.

With over 100 years of experience in the field of scarring and one of the first multi-disciplinary scar teams in the UK to take a holistic approach to treatment, Nuffield Health combines physiotherapy with psychology and cutting edge approaches to help patients through their scar journey from start to finish.
Mr Jon Pleat said: “There are over one hundred treatments described for scarring and no single magic solution. The action required will depend upon the type of scar, its stage of healing and a number of other factors in a patient’s history such as prior treatments, other medical conditions and allergies.

“Our patients not only benefit from the extensive expertise of our scar team but also access to the latest cutting edge techniques – some of which are only offered here at The Chesterfield. We specialise in procedures such as artificial skin, camouflage makeup, spray on skin, micro-needling and the use of Botox for itchy scars.”

He added: “One of the more specialist treatments we provide is through the use of a Cryoshape™ machine which is used to treat Keloid scars; these are angry scars that grow lumpy and larger than the wound they are healing. We are the only team offering this treatment in Bristol and it’s truly revolutionary because it uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the scar from the inside out, helping to significantly reduce the scar’s volume in a single session, allowing patients to leave the hospital on the same day and return to their daily activities.”
